Sound quality – some fluctuations in the audio quality with dropouts. The debate begins on 0203-B. The meeting at the end of this side is hard to identify. A female speaker at 53:30 mentions ‘we.. the Gay Liberation Movement’. However in Phil Parkinson’s log it mentions Parliamentary debate on report back of the petition of the Homosexual Law Reform Society in 1968

Summary

Vote on the second reading of the Crimes Amendment Bill (4 July 1975) introduced by Venn Young

01:05

John (Jack) Marshall - If it was only a moral issue.. In my view homosexual behaviour has social and public consequences.. The maintenance of family life is important.. some may become addicted to homosexual behaviour.. it may become more widely practiced and undermined the family.. unnatural .. a perversion.. national degeneration.. We shouldn’t follow Britain

05:20

Marshall - It’s been claimed that the current law is not enforceable.. that’s not true.. When police do have such evidence they prosecute.. There is some evidence that wife beating still goes on in this country .. comparison between wife beating and the Amendment Bill .. I would favour a reform looking at other forms of punishment rather than imprisonment

08:00

Venn Young – I thank you all for considering something which is hard to comprehend.. support from the churches.. Arrest, trial and sentence can be devastating for an otherwise law-abiding homosexual..

11:05

Young – I find it difficult to understand Members with inflexible attitudes.. Age of consent argument .. The Select Committee recommend the age of consent should be twenty .. Legality and morality.. The opponents have three arguments -we need a moral code, punishing the homosexual demonstrates societies condemnation of the act..

16:00

Young - What good is there a law that stops homosexuals .. sending them to prison won’t stop them.. Everyone has the right to moral views.. the law does not do this.. if opponents consider Lesbian acts immoral then why don’t they introduce a law making it illegal

18:10

Young - My Amendment to the Crimes Act is proposed on the basis of humanity, logic and equality .. compassion
