01:10 | Neil Morrison - Many Christians would consider me a total backslider.. The House is concerned with the morals of the nation.. I haven’t done a referendum in my electorate.. Civilization .. I believe we are here for a purpose.. we need to provide reasonable guidelines.. Destiny.. The Bible is a grand book.. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone .. I’m on the list of the bad people.. I have three questions.. Is homosexuality natural? Does it have purpose? Is it productive? I think not.. I will vote against the first reading |
| |
05:30 | Richard Northey – I’ve been a member of the Homosexual Law Reform Society since the mid-1960s.. I consider it a vital and urgent matter.. human rights.. equality.. Homosexual preference is not developed through corruption.. sexual identity.. sexual oppression and inadequacies for young people.. sexually transmitted diseases.. homosexuals are not child molesters.. |
| |
11:00 | Northey – to deny the expression of physical affection.. Churches have endorsed the need for change.. Psychiatrists, social workers have stated there needs to be change.. it is natural .. it has been a consistent activity throughout the ages.. Kinsey report.. I support the change in the Human Rights Act.. It is what the people in my electorate want.. Members should take courage.. |
| |
14:50 | Winston Peters – The public perception will be that it is a Labour Bill. |
| |
15:45 | Speaker – We are out of time.. call on Fran Wilde for a response |
| |
16:00 | Fran Wilde – Response to points made.. All research points to the fact that sexual orientation happens at a very young age |
| |
18:00 | Wilde - I didn’t feel that I needed to send my intentions to Members that would oppose this Bill.. This is not a Government measure.. compiled list of MPs not compiled by me.. AIDS.. the major reason for change is that the law is no longer relevant.. I would ask Members to vote for this Bill.. |
| |
21:50 | Speaker – vote.. division called for |
| |
22:35 | Announcer – an interlude of music as we await the division |
| |
23:00 | Speaker – 51 Ayes, 24 Noes.. passed.. Homosexual Law Reform Bill first reading |
