29:20

Gays and Lesbians are having children..

29:40

Carol – we have a regular get-together each month.. we could have said a lot more that was positive..

30:10

Carol – it’s overwhelming being a mother .. my son is eight-weeks old.. well supported.. I’ve thought about this for a long time.. it’s gone really well.. deciding whether or not to be a mother is always an issue for women.. I came out at 27 (eleven years ago).. it was a joyful exciting time.. parenting wasn’t uppermost in my mind.. a few years later when I was 33 I began a relationship with a woman who had three teenagers.. issues – poverty and custody.. I spent four-and-a-half years co-parenting the teenagers.. very happy ..

34:20

Carol -The relationship ended after four years.. I thought about how being a co-parent was different from being a biological parent.. It was a real priority to become a parent.. I’d never tested my fertility.. I talked to two gay friends.. Within a month I had two men willing to be donors.. Six women were having regular dinners.. three of the women started doing insemination.. the other option was sexual intercourse..

37:00

Carol - Because of my age I wondered that I might have to do intercourse.. but being a rape and incest survivor I think it would have been disastrous for me.. The clinics are only available for wealthy, married couples..

38:00

Carol - donors .. I went in with an open mind.. one man wanted to be a donor, the other wanted to be a father.. I chose the father.. looking at the child’s rights..

38:50

Carol - I was very open about the amount of access the father would have.. Bob was at the birth.. we have a delightful charming son.. The other women chose different paths, but it’s all ended up rather similarly ..

41:00

Carol – workshop at the Gay and Lesbian Conference in 1989.. we have an information sheet..

42:30

Andrew, obviously it’s not as easy as a gay man to have a child..

43:00

Andrew – as I was growing up .. I always had nieces and nephews around me.. I did my nursing training.. nursing children.. When I came back from overseas I lived with a family that had a new born baby.. I wanted to do this thing too.. I thought it might be impossible coming out and having children..

44:40

Andrew – Tried to have children with an old friend.. been involved with two lesbians wanting a child.. fostering children.. putting lesbian and gay youth into lesbian and gay households.. saw Torch Song Trilogy..
