Make a Bequest to Kawe Mahara

Leave a financial gift in your will for the Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa Trust.

Thank you for considering us in your estate planning. We hope that we are a good fit with your desire to leave a legacy for Aotearoa New Zealand's queer and takatāpui communities.

The principles and concepts of whanaungatanga and whakapapa1 from Māoritanga guide and inspire us in our efforts to collect, preserve and make available the records of these communities.

Legal Advice

Do involve your lawyer in determining the best way to leave a gift to us. Your lawyer will need:

  • our Charities number: CC27707
  • our full legal name: Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa Trust
  • our contact details: Attn: Treasurer, Gavin Hamilton, board@laganz.org.nz, 021 0200 7913, C/o Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library, 70 Molesworth Street, WELLINGTON 6011.

Your wishes regarding depositing personal papers or digital materials with Kawe Mahara may also need to be expressed in your will.

Suggested Wording for Your Will

This wording is typical and may be a good start before customising it with your lawyer. Note the different options. You could also opt to support a particular collection.

I give and bequeath the sum of $________ (or) __ % of my estate, (or) residue of my estate, (or) property or assets as follows free of all charges, to the Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa Trust.

Support Kawe Mahara's Activities or Collections

Presently all Kawe Mahara's activities are carried out by volunteers. Our policy is to apply non-specific bequests to general activities. Our long-term priority activities include:

  • Digital archive fund to build and operate an online collection platform
  • Curator salaries to ensure Kawe Mahara's access to professional archiving expertise
  • Digitisation of items in Kawe Mahara's collections.

Priority Collections

These collections are a priority for preservation (including digital preservation) and/or for arrangement and description work that will make collection items discoverable and accessible to researchers:

  • Audio files and summaries from both our earlier digitisation projects: homosexual law reform and lesbian radio from the 1980s and 1990s
  • Video, images from the former GayNZ.com website
  • Audio from interviews and transcripts created as part of our oral history project (still ongoing) and other oral histories that have been donated
  • Wild Film video collection
  • Dana de Milo collection
  • NZ AIDS Memorial Quilt website on disc from November 2017
  • Kapiti Gay Archive - interviews broadcast on Coast Access Radio on disc 2015-2019.

We plan to acknowledge bequests in online collection records.

Make a Bequest to Kawe Mahara Information Sheet

Download the one page information sheet summarising how to leave a bequest (financial gift) to Kawe Mahara:

Notes

1. Whanaungatanga - working together to support each other across all generations; a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. Whakapapa - descent from one's ancestors, the people who have come before us.
